Exclusive: Director Lee Daniels on working with Mariah Carey
Today is the seven-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, and it’s amazing to see how the city of New Orleans has rebuilt itself, becoming what’s known as Hollywood South.

So we called up one of the big-name directors who’s currently filming there, Lee Daniels, to get the scoop on his latest movie, The Butler, which is due next year and has halted production this week due to Tropical Storm Isaac. 

The Oscar-nominated filmmaker had a lot to say about working with Mariah Carey for the second time He had previously cast her in Precious as a social worker, a role that got her a ton of praise.

Tell us what about the work you are currently doing in New Orleans.
I’m doing two films here. I just got done doing The Paperboy [a thriller to be released in October] and I am currently filming The Butler. Paperboy was shot in New Orleans but takes places in Miami. Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, Matthew McConaughey are all in it.

The tax incentive is a very powerful reason to be filming here in New Orleans. I’m able to get so much more for my money. Investors love it! That’s the primary reason and then the other is reason is that the weather is so fabulous, the food is so good, the people are so wonderful. After Katrina, you know that you are giving back. There were so many people that were unemployed and in just such rough situations, so it’s the totality of all that that excites me about working in Louisiana.

Is filming in NOLA really that “easy”?

New York, it’s so fast! And I live there. I’ve also lived in L.A. for quite a while too. It’s just a different way. It’s the Big Easy baby [laughs]! And just be prepared to walk away 10, 15, 20 pounds heavier, so if you can hang with that then, yeah. You just gotta hit that Equinox treadmill when you get home. But we are out in the country and it gets a little scary sometimes cause you can see that confederate flag.

Are there alligators?

In Paperboy we have Zac Efron swimming with alligators to escape from a mythical John Cusack.

Your current project The Butler stars a lot of big names, including Forest Whitaker and Oprah and focuses on the life of the White House butler Eugene Allen, who spanned eight US Presidents.  How did you get involved with it?

My friend who passed away Laura Ziskin wanted this movie made so bad [Editor’s Note: this great article from Indiewire discusses just how much Ziskin pushed to have this movie made].

She was the producer of As Good As It Gets, Pretty Woman, Spiderman. She wanted me to direct this film and I was so honored to work with her. She fought on her deathbed to get the movie made. And a beautiful woman named Shelia Johnson who created BET (who no longer is with BET). Between the two of them they pulled it together and they believed in me. People that are silent heroes are not normally vocal about the film, but they are the matriarchs of The Butler.

I always get nervous but you know all I can do is my best. I pray that I can make something that they can be proud of.

You’ve got a very particular directing style. Can we talk about it?

Well, I got some chains and some whips [laughs]. I’m really frank, very open, very honest about myself to people — obnoxiously honest, which forces them into a place of honesty. There are no egos on the set. The ego is the film. We’re here to serve the film and if you are not doing it right, then you really suck, do it again!

Did you know that Mariah tweeted from the set of The Butler?

Wait a minute, you will be the first one to tell me this because it’s a big deal! I don’t tweet or anything like that. I do Instagram because my boyfriend turned me on to it. Mariah said, “[Being here] it’s a big deal so what do I tweet?” I said, “whatever you wanna tweet!” She was like, “Lee I don’t wanna like freak you out or anything.”  I said “Mariah, I don’t care what you say!” So now I’m about to hear from you what she said.

I’ll read it to you, it says: “Just finished my first day on “The Butler”, what an honor working with such a legendary, stellar ensemble. Thank you Lee Daniels.”

Awwwww…I would have cast her as a stripper having sex with John Kennedy. I would’ve cast her as a bartender you know, as a white southern racist bartender. I would’ve cast her in anything you know what I mean because she is my buddy. But I can’t tell you what she plays. Did she tell anyone what she plays? I’ll kill her if she did. Kill her! I was going to hang up the phone and stop the interview right now.

I would’ve cast her in anything because she understands me. She is not a diva. But she is a diva, don’t get me wrong. She is a complete psychotic diva in the best way the minute I yell “Cut!” when she is in the work. I don’t have the words to describe the love I have for her.

Mariah Carey Gives Baby Pictures to Fans, Not Tabloids

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon have decided not to sell their baby pictures to tabloids. Instead, they’ve essentially given them away to fans on Mariah’s website. At the same time, they’re asking publications and others who want copies to buy them from dembabies.com, where proceeds will go to Mariah’s Fresh Air Fund Camp.

This lovely act of altruism is certainly a first, as we’re expecting pictures of Snooki’s baby, Lorenzo, to be flogged somewhere any minute. (Not to say there’s any comparison between Mariah and Snooki.)

Mariah has been running Camp Mariah for about twenty years through good times and bad, and has taken it pretty seriously. You can read about it at www.freshairfund.org. We’re running a picture from the website here on our site, so we’re sending a check to the Fresh Air Fund immediately. Nice stuff, Nick and Mariah!

“I actually went to beauty school in 11th grade so I could have something to fall back on, so believe me, I’ve done my share of manicures as well as getting them,” said Carey, who added that although a neutral nail is her go-to, she has been recently donning metallic and pastel shades. “OPI knows that the polish you use makes a big difference not only in the look, but in the care of your nails and that’s why I believe in the brand.

“It is an eclectic mix of vocal-driven ballads, up-tempos and midtempos,” said Carey about the upcoming release. “I’m not one to refer to myself in the third person, but a lot of songs will feel like ‘classic Mariah Carey songs.’”

t's time to get Back To Football as the NFL begins its 93rd season with a rocking celebration in its special pregame show, "NFL KICKOFF 2012 PRESENTED BY BUD LIGHT" – 7:30 PM ET Wednesday, September 5. Multi-platinum global stars MARIAH CAREY and NO DOUBT are scheduled to perform in the 10th anniversary of NFL Kickoff.

There will be simulcast coverage of the 60-minute pregame show from Rockefeller Center in New York City which will air from 7:30 – 8:30 PM ET on NBC and NFL Network. The live pregame broadcast also will be available via NFL Mobile only from Verizon.

The musical performances are part of the celebration to kick off the 2012 season and to honor the Super Bowl champion New York Giants. This is the third Kickoff set at an iconic New York City landmark, following shows live from Times Square (2002) and Columbus Circle (2008). This is the 10th anniversary of NFL Kickoff continuing the tradition of saluting the Super Bowl champions with the opening game in their stadium in primetime.

With latest single "Triumphant (Get 'Em)," Mariah Carey is offering something for everyone.

During a Def Jam conference call with media on Aug. 2, the singer debuted a hip-hop version of the track featuring Rick Ross and Meek Mill, while simultaneously releasing a "vintage throwback remix" and "pulse club mix" on her website, MariahCarey.com.

Previewing the multiple versions of the single -- co-written and co-produced by Carey, Jermaine Dupri and Bryan-Michael Cox -- reveals the diversity of musical genres expected on her untitled 14th album, tentatively due in March 2013. According to Carey manager Randy Jackson, releasing the three different versions of "Triumphant" speaks to her ability to cater to multiple audiences and radio formats.

"The vintage throwback mix will remind fans of remixes she did years ago, and she's had a lot of Billboard No. 1 dance hits as well," Jackson says. "She went in and re-sang the vocals, knowing that the two verses on this first version of this single with Meek and Ross were going to be hip-hop verses where people were rapping. We wanted to have something for all of her fans."

The radio attack plan is multipronged as well. The single has already been released on YouTube in streaming format, having racked up almost 500,000 views since it was uploaded earlier this month. Island Def Jam plans to service the hip-hop version to R&B/hip-hop radio on Aug. 13, and is mapping out strategies to deliver other versions across dance formats.

Releasing three versions has played to Carey's benefit. Some fans criticized the fact that Ross and Mill overshadow the singer on her own song and gravitated toward the club-geared mixes.

"Most people probably don't understand this, but you always play to what's best for the song," Jackson says. "You don't go in and say, 'Wait a minute. I know they're rapping on these verses, but I need to be singing on these verses. Me, me, me.' It just turns out that way."

For Carey, enlisting rappers for a single is nothing new. Since the onset of her career, she's collaborated with Jay-Z, Ol' Dirty Bastard and Busta Rhymes, adding hip-hop flavor to pop-leaning tracks. The choice to release three versions of "Triumphant" mirrors a similar strategy used for 2009 single "Obsessed," for which she shot two music videos: a solo edit and a remix featuring Gucci Mane. The original version of the cut peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the club remix later topped the Dance Club Songs chart, scoring a hit across formats.

"Her idea with all her music is to get it out to her fans, and hopefully lift everyone's spirits a little bit," says Jackson, who notes that "Triumphant" was inspired by Carey's husband, Nick Cannon, and his struggle with kidney failure earlier this year. "It's really about having it succeed, and people are hearing it."

In anticipation of the single's release, Carey has already shot a video directed by Cannon and set for release in the forthcoming weeks. She has a "big performance planned soon for television," and will appear in director Lee Daniels' upcoming film, "The Butler." Of course, she also recently cut a deal to serve as a judge on "American Idol" that's rumored to be worth $18 million. During the next few months, however, Jackson insists that completing the album is her main focus.

"The album is going to be one of the great Mariah Carey albums," he says, "with a lot of stuff that you've come to love about her over the years."

Following a line with Ms. Nicki Minaj, the nail brand is going for another chart-topping vocalist for its next line of lacquers.

WWD reports that the superstar singer signed on for two nail polish collections, both launching next year.

The first collection of eight shades will hit OPI salons, spas and retailers worldwide in January, followed by another collection later in the year.

After taking some time off to get married and give birth to twins, Carey is slated to make a comeback with a new album releasing soon, so the timing of her beauty collab could not have been better planned.

Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, executive vice president and artistic director of OPI tells WWD, “Nails are part of her personality. I really have always looked for celebrities for whom nails are very important, and it is not something you just Photoshop on a picture. She was very much part of the color selection.”

Mariah fans since 'Always Be My Baby' hit number one in '96, we can't wait for the Grammy Award-winner's sure-to-be glittery and glam polishes.

Sources close to the new “American Idol” judge say that after Carey releases her new album later this year with Universal she’s “more than seriously considering” returning to working with “X-Factor” judge L.A. Reid, who is now at Sony. Reid, formerly CEO of Island Def Jam Music Group, is widely given credit for reviving Carey’s career in 2005. He joined Sony in July 2011 and is now chairman and CEO of its Epic label. The record exec and the singer remain close friends, and one source even says Reid was instrumental in Carey’s joining “Idol.” And another “Idol” judge, Randy Jackson — who also serves as Carey’s manager — wants her to work again with Reid. Jackson thinks “L.A. is the right guy for Mariah,” says the source. A spokeswoman for Carey says “Mariah is still happily under contract with Island Def Jam” and that “she just wrapped the video for ‘Triumphant (Get ’Em),’ the first single from her upcoming album.”

As you may know, Triumphant is on sale since yesterday on iTunes in some countries and the track hasn't even been sent to radios, (some radios plan to "pirate" the track to be able to play it) can I say *rolleyes* (my rolleyes emoticon is even too cute in that case ).

Anyway, you guys from the Promo Team & Street Team are doing what you can and you do great!!! At least we try ......

"Meek adds an excitement, a newness to the record that is pretty rare right now," Mariah continued.

"Triumphant," which Randy Jackson chimed in to say is "inspirational," is the first single off Mariah's 14th studio album. The singer touched on the untitled album while on the call. "I'm collaborating with a lot of my favorite people but the main thing is [that] I'm not trying to follow any particular trend," she said. "I want it to be well received. I want to stay true to myself and the music that I love and make the fans happy."

Mariah also spoke on how she felt of the current state of R&B and its mainstream cross-over, saying "It would be incredible if we can bring back the days where R&B songs didn't have to cross over. It makes me sad that there are so many talented R&B artists that don't get the chance that they should."
