Mariah confirmed at the Live 8 in London
The organisers of Live 8 have announced the performers' names in alphabetical order "because so many stars were taking part" it was impossible to choose a headline act.
In London's Hyde Park, those performing include Mariah Carey, Coldplay, Dido, Keane, Sir Elton John, Annie Lennox, Madonna, Muse, the Scissor Sisters, Sir Paul McCartney, Joss Stone, Stereophonics, Sting, Snoop, Robbie Williams, U2 and REM.
In Philadelphia, acts performing will include Will Smith, the Dave Matthews Band, Bon Jovi, Stevie Wonder, Puff Daddy and Jay-Z.
Among artists scheduled for Berlin are A-Ha, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Lauryn Hill and Brian Wilson.
The concert in Rome will feature musicians including Faith Hill and Duran Duran.
In Paris, Jamiroquai, Craig David, Youssou N’Dour and Yannick Noah will be among those taking part.
Geldof said the concert was not going to be "gloomy and doomy" and was "not for charity but for political justice".
He said organisers had “scrambled like crazy to put this together”, adding: “I think we’re almost there.”
He said: “The continent in those 20 years … has gone into economic decline by a factor of 25%. The result of that is we see people dying on TV screens every night. This is to finally, as much as as we can, put a stop to that.”
He added: “It seemed to me that we could gather again, not for charity but for political justice.”

For Mariah Carey, all that isn't 'Glitter' is gold
by Liz Smith
NOBODY CAN have a long career without experiencing the downside: some failure. But you have to remain positive. Because if you don't, your sadness will lead to bitterness and fester into something ugly and unproductive. I think ahead. I never look back."

So says Mariah Carey, who emerged from the tarnished dust of Glitter -- the movie and the album -- and the iffy reception of Charmbracelet. She stands today at the pinnacle of her career. Carey's CD, The Emancipation of Mimi, has gone double-platinum. What's more, her latest single, "We Belong Together," is her 16th song to top the Billboard Hot 100. Right this minute, Mariah is the most successful female recording star ever. Only the Beatles and Elvis have had more No. 1 singles.

These days Mariah sounds like a woman who has her act together. She is full of bubbly excitement and appreciation, but not frantic, worried, obsessed or over-worked. (The star insists she'll never run her energy into the ground again, as she did a few years back. This despite the fact that almost the minute she got off the phone she was heading for L.A. and then the day after to Japan.)

How does it feel to be historic in the music industry? "Pretty, great, I have to admit. But as pleased as I am for myself, that I accomplished what I wanted to on this record, I am happier for my fans. They stuck by me. It's not that I exist for my fans, but I owe them my best. They've given me their best."

I suggested that her album should be subtitled, The Vindication of Mariah. She laughed, "Oh, I don't think about it that way, really. What this does mean, is that I have the freedom, the prerogative, if you will, to make the kind of music I want. If I want to do a gospel album, I can. Or whatever. I want to be versatile, always change, always challenge myself."

What about movies? "Believe it or not, I want to do more. And that's because aside from Glitter, I also did a little indie, Wise Girls. It got great reviews and made me feel very encouraged about a film career. Anyway, people always forget that Glitter came out on Sept. 11, 2001. Maybe it wouldn't have made a difference, but I don't think it helped."

The future? "Well, I'm a right-now kind of girl. So for the very first time, I am really enjoying my career and success. I am in this moment. But I have to say, I attended Oprah's tribute to women of color, and talking to people like Leontyne Price and Tina Turner and Diana Ross . . . it made me know I want to go on and on. And to never be afraid."

I told Mariah that her 1994 Christmas album was my favorite, and find her "O Holy Night" one of the great, moving renditions of that song. "Oh, thanks! I am the queen of all festivities, especially Christmas, so recording that had a real significance. I'm also thinking of doing a Broadway revue based around the album. Not this year, but maybe next." (Two of the original songs Carey wrote, "All I Want for Christmas Is You" and "I Miss You Most at Christmastime" have become new holiday standards.)

Mariah gave me a hearty, happy farewell as she was hustled off to her next gig. (I have literally never heard her sound so assured.) She performs at the MTV Movie Awards on June 9 and the BET Awards on June 28. She's on a roll. She's back bigger than ever. And I'm happy to say I never thought she wouldn't be.

Mariah in London in July ? part 3
On May the 10th,  I already posted the probability of Mariah attending the "Party in the Park", on May the 24th., I posted that this year "Party in the Park" has been cancelled to make way for a possible Live Aid II event.  Live Aid II called Live 8 would take place in London's Hyde Park on July the 2nd..  A similar event may also take place on the same day in Washington.  Today, there's more news....and line-up details will be revealed in today and in the next days, we all hope Mariah will perform at one of the locations, let's cross the fingers.
Live Aid... the sequel
By Neil McCormick
He said it would never happen but at 2pm today, Sir Bob Geldof will officially announce that a second Live Aid will take place on Saturday July 2, with simultaneous concerts in London, Philadelphia and several other locations around the world.
Until recently, Geldof has dismissed any suggestion that there could be a follow-up to his ground-breaking 1985 charity concerts, describing the idea as a "disaster", threatening legal action against anyone who attempted to appropriate the Live Aid trademark and insisting: "I wouldn't do it and I can't see a point to it."
The arguments of global debt campaigners, including U2's Bono and Coldplay's Chris Martin, have evidently helped change his mind. Twenty years after the original, a sequel has been approved. It will not, however, be billed as Live Aid II. Instead, it will be Live 8. Its focus is the G8 Summit of world leaders in Edinburgh the following week, July 6-8. Aligning itself with the Make Poverty History campaign, this time around the primary intention is not to raise money, but raise awareness.
"We'll have all the biggest names we can find," Geldof said at the Ivor Novello award ceremony last Thursday. "But it's not just about big names, it's about making a point. What we do in the next five weeks is seriously, properly, historically, politically important."
The showpiece events will take place in Hyde Park in London (replacing the annual Capital FM Party in the Park event in aid of The Prince's Trust) and at an undisclosed location in Philadelphia (chosen for its city-scape backdrop, after mooted venues in New York and Washington fell through).
There are rumours of simultaneous events being staged around the world, including in Scotland, France, Germany and South Africa.
The line-up was being worked out in a series of increasingly frantic phone calls over the past few weeks, but is likely to include (in Britain) Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, U2, Oasis, Madonna, Robbie Williams, Coldplay, Sting, Annie Lennox and Joss Stone; and (in the US) Eminem, Usher, Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey and Prince.

Mariah gets 16th US No 1
Mariah Carey has made US chart history with her 16th Number One single.
"We Belong Together" took the top spot from Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" on the Billboard Hot 100 this week, making Carey the biggest-selling female artist of all time.
She told a UK tabloid: "I only found out just before I went into a charity dinner on Wednesday night [May 25]. I was in shock for the first half and afterwards Jay-Z threw a surprise party for me at his club, 40/40. There was even a cake with 'Sweet 16' on it."
"I was still out and I started getting calls to go and do [US breakfast TV show] "Good Morning America" so I didn't get much sleep!"
"We Belong Together" is the second single from Carey's comeback album "The Emancipation of Mimi".

"My family hate me at Christmas"
Pop beauty Mariah Carey falls out with her family and friends every Christmas - because she insists on playing non-stop festive tunes throughout the yuletide period.
The Honey singer is currently writing a musical based on her 1994 album Merry Christmas, and she admits her obsession with carols turns the festive holiday into an annual nightmare for those around her.
She explains, "It's the most important thing. I go to Aspen (Colorado) with friends and family. We are so festive we're like little kids.
"We go on sleigh rides, Santa Claus comes to visit us and, you know, it's just beautiful. It's snowing and it's a winter wonderland.
"But I don't let anybody listen to anything but Christmas music for the entire time and they end up really hating me by the end of the trip."

Heroes comment: A lot of fans are excited with the musical, who wouldn't? But like I already said a few times before, we still don't have an official news confirming Mariah will perform herself in the musical.  Every article I read and even Mariah talked about writing.

Mariah's Fantasy featured on new CD/DVD
Ol' Dirty Bastard "Defined" On New Anthology CD/DVD
Just as Dirt McGirt's posthumous album readies to hit the streets, Rhino Records is slated to drop The Definitive Ol' Dirty Bastard Story this June.
The 16-song set also features a bonus DVD including all of Dirty's music videos. The CD features a collection of classic Dirty material like "Brooklyn Zoo" and the Kelis-assisted "Get Your Money" as well as collaborations like "Ghetto Supastar" with Pras and Mya and "Fantasy" remix with Mariah Carey.
Meanwhile, the bonus DVD features all three versions of Dirt's "Brooklyn Zoo" videos in addition to "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" and "Got Your Money." The DVD also includes a rare O.D.B. interview that originally aired on The Box's "Box Talk" in 1995. During the interview, the always eccentric O.D.B. gives a tour of his native Brooklyn with his cousin RZA. The set also features liner notes written by Mass Appeal Editorial Director Sacha Jenkins and several tributes to Dirt.
"You got artists calling themselves 'ugly' on tracks, or 'dirty.' He wasn't an ugly individual, as far as physical appearance, but he sparked that in a lot of individuals," shared GZA aka The Genius. "You even had Biggie saying, 'Black and ugly as ever.' I remember they had something in The Source about the 'Ten Ugliest MCs,' and they had Dirt in there. If you was to show this to an average MC, he would be mad about it, like, 'They tryin' to play me?!' Dirt was smiling; mad he wasn't number one. He was psyched about being in there."
The Definitive Ol' Dirty Bastard Story hits stores June 21.

Do-Re-'Mimi'
Mariah sets record with 16th chart-topper. Her hit ''We Belong Together'' makes her the most successful female singles artist ever and puts her behind just Elvis and the Beatles on the all-time list by Gary Susman

How complete is Mariah Carey's comeback? Not only has The Emancipation of Mimi sold more than 2 million copies since its release last month (it's currently No. 3 on the Billboard album chart), but the album's ballad ''We Belong Together'' has set a record as her 16th song to top the Billboard Top 100 singles chart. That makes her the most successful female singles artist ever, and the third most-successful singles artist of all time, behind only Elvis (18 No. 1 singles) and the Beatles (20 chart-toppers). Her label, Island Def Jam, claims the ballad has reached an audience of 157 million (by whatever measure the industry uses to measure the impact of singles these days), which would make it the biggest song in history.
''I don't know that it's sunken in yet,'' Carey told the Associated Press on Thursday, a day after label chief Antonio ''L.A.'' Reid threw her a ''Sweet Sixteen'' party at Jay-Z's 40-40 club in New York to celebrate her achievement. ''I look at this moment as an incredible blessing. It's part of my struggle,'' said Carey, noting how far she's come since her megaflop Glitter four years ago. ''It's made me a stronger person and made me appreciate this.''

Mariah may enjoy a quick vacation in Capri next month and talks about a tour that could last up to six months.
Sweet 16 bash for Mariah
There's no rest for the comeback queen. Just after Mariah Carey learned her song, "We Belong Together," topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart the other night, Universal head Doug Morris, Def Jam president Jay-Z, Island/Def Jam chairman L.A. Reid, Jermaine Dupri and Patti LaBelle whisked her to 40/40 where they held a surprise "Sweet 16" party to mark the diva's 16th No. 1 hit. "I'm trying to enjoy the moment. I was out very late last night," Carey told Page Six yesterday. She may get a quick vacation in Capri next month. "I can't miss my Capri," she said, but she's focusing on putting together a tour that could last up to six months. "I am spending Memorial Day in Japan — I end up spending all the U.S. holidays in Japan. But I might buy a trinket to celebrate my 16th hit."

Chart Beat
From Aug. 4,1990, the week she hit No. 1 for the first time on Billboard's Hot 100 (with "Vision of Love"), Mariah Carey occupied the chart's summit for at least one week every year through 2000, when she spent the week of Feb. 19 in pole position with "Thank God I Found You."
Carey hasn't visited the zenith since -- until now. More than five years after "Thank God I Found You," Carey earns her 16th No. 1 with "We Belong Together" (Island). This new chart-topper keeps Carey in third place among all artists with the most No. 1s in the rock era, but inches her ever closer to matching and surpassing Elvis Presley's second-place total of 17 No. 1 hits. The Beatles remain in first place with 20.
"We Belong Together" is Carey's first No. 1 on the Hot 100 without any featured artists in seven years and one week, since "My All" topped the chart the week of May 23, 1998.
A 2-1 rise on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart is good enough to make "We Belong Together" Carey's ninth No. 1 on this survey, and her first since "Loverboy" led the list for two weeks in August 2001.
Carey was supported on "Loverboy" by Da Brat and Ludacris. "We Belong Together" is Carey's first No.1 without any guest artists since "Always Be My Baby" captured the top spot in May 1996.

Mariah Nets 16th Hot 100 No. 1
By Barry A. Jeckell, N.Y.

With the 2-1 ascension of "We Belong Together" in the song's eighth week on Billboard's Hot 100, Mariah Carey notches her 16th No. 1 on the singles chart. In addition, the track, which is also the Hot 100's greatest airplay gainer, moves 2-1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart to become her ninth chart topper there.
As Fred Bronson reports in this week's "Chart Beat" column, Carey has not been on top of the Hot 100 since 2000 with "Thank God I Found You." The last time she landed there with a purely solo track (with no other featured artists) was in 1998 with "My All."
Carey's move to No. 1 comes as Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" drops to No. 2 after four weeks on top. But Stefani's not done yet, as "Hollaback" remains in the catbird seat on Billboard's Pop 100 chart for a fifth week.

MARIAH's SWEET SIXTEEN!
MARIAH’s SWEET 16th #1 WITH WE BELONG TOGETHER – SHARES PANTHEON WITH THE BEATLES & ELVIS PRESLEY!
THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI CERTIFIED DOUBLE-PLATINUM
Performer and songwriter Mariah Carey secures her place as the #1 most successful female artist of all time as We Belong Together becomes her 16th song to top the Billboard Hot 100. This positions Mariah as the only artist in contention to surpass the Beatles (with 20 #1’s) and Elvis Presley (18 #1’s) in the modern era. (With 62 total weeks of #1 hits since 1990, Mariah also ranks 2nd only to Elvis, with 80 weeks.) This monumental achievement comes as Mariah’s brand new Island Def Jam album, the top 5 THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI, crosses the RIAA double-platinum mark of 2 million units, just 6 weeks after its stunning #1 debut on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

“Mariah Carey’s energy and enthusiasm is at an all-time high,” said Antonio “L.A.” Reid, Chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group, “and MIMI is on the verge of becoming one of the most successful albums of her career as a result. It is with a combination of pride and awe that I congratulate Mariah on accomplishing what no other female in modern pop history has been able to do – no one is more deserving than Mariah Carey of sharing the pantheon with the greatest of the greats.”

We Belong Together, written by Mariah and co-produced by her with Jermaine Dupri – also #1 on the Rhythmic Top 40 chart (the most spins ever by a female at the format), #1 on the Streaming Audio chart for a 6th consecutive week, and #1 overall on the AOL Music Network’s Top 11 – has been named the biggest single in the HISTORY of both Mariah and Island Def Jam as it passes the 157 million audience plateau this week. The videos for We Belong Together and It’s Like That stay in rotation on VH1, MTV and BET – both clips were shot contiguously by famed Hollywood director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Red Dragon, After the Sunset).

Mariah’s 2 month-long television schedule brought her to Los Angeles for performances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Ellen DeGeneres Show – after appearances in New York on Good Morning America, The Late Show with David Letterman, Live with Regis & Kelly, and The View. Mariah performed We Belong Together as Oprah Winfrey’s special lead guest on Tuesday, May 24th, for the finale show of Oprah’s Wildest Dreams season. Also just announced: Mariah will perform We Belong Together at the star-studded annual MTV Movie Awards, airing June 9th at 8:30 p.m./ET. On June 28th, Mariah will perform at the 5th annual BET Awards gala, where she is nominated as Best Female R&B Artist.

Mariah Carey is an award-winning superstar with cumulative total sales of her albums, singles and long-form videos in excess of 75-times platinum in the U.S. alone and 150 million worldwide, making her the top-selling female artist in history. With a record 16 #1 singles – more than any female artist of the past century – two Grammy Awards, eight American Music Awards, Billboard magazine’s Artist of the Decade Award, and the World Music Award as World's Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium – Mariah Carey’s ongoing career remains an unparalleled success story in the history of contemporary popular music.

Mariah thrilled that opera diva Price knows who she is
Mariah Carey was stunned when legendary opera star Leontyn Price insisted on meeting her at Oprah Winfrey's recent Legend's Ball - because she felt sure the diva had mistaken her for someone else.
Price, 78, was among the African-American women being honoured at the weekend gala, held partly at Winfrey's California estate.
And she made a point of telling Carey she was a big fan.
A thrilled Carey says, "Leontyn Price actually was telling me that she knew my video... and this is a woman who has made history and paved the way for just everybody.
"When Mrs Price was telling me about my video and talking to me about my songs and my life and all these things, I was just so honoured and so shocked that she even knew."

For The Record:
Mariah Carey's making plans for her next single, which she's decided will be "Shake It Off," a track produced by Jermaine Dupri. "Jermaine is in such a great place musically," Carey told MTV News recently. "I mean, everything he's done over the past two years, it's just beyond huge, first of all. But second of all, he's just focused. Like he's very much in the space he needs to be in musically. And I feel like I am as well." Carey calls the song "totally one of my favorites," but hasn't decided yet on the director or concept for the video, according to her label rep. ...
Source: MTV (All rights reserved)
Heroes comment: I thought Brett Ratner was directing the video, but, now that I think about it, we still haven't an official confirmation of who's gonna be the director, but contrary to MTV or the label rep, I'm sure they know the concept, as they normally are busy shooting the video.

Carey keeps her promise to 12-year old singing sensation
Mariah Carey lived up to the promise she made a 12-year-old Hawaiian fan in March (05) when she helped launch his singing career on pal Oprah Winfrey's TV show yesterday (24May05).
The pop superstar thrilled Paul Robbins on his 12th birthday earlier this year when she capped off his appearance on the Oprah show by offering him the chance to record a song she had written especially for him.
And the pre-teen wannabe got the chance to show off his amazing voice when Carey and Winfrey invited him back to perform the tune I Pray.
Carey says, "I tried to morph myself into the mindset of a kid like Paul.
"I just hope that people who hear it (the single) enjoy it and sense the pure heart that he has when he sings. I feel like that's gonna shine through."

The Latest "Scoop" On Hip-Hop's Favorite Fatman
by Jesse Gissen
Hot 97's Fatman Scoop – one of hip-hop loudest and most rambunctious personalities - has been making some big moves lately, working with Mariah Carey, Missy Elliott and P. Diddy.
After coming off a #1 single in Europe last year and a successful run as host of a UK Hip-Hop reality TV show (similar to "Making the Band"), Fatman Scoop is showing no signs of slowing down. He was most recently featured on Mariah Carey's #1 single "It's Like That," featuring Jermaine Dupri. The single helped to secure Mariah's highest 1st week album sales ever.
Presently, Scoop is contributing his frenetic energy to Missy Elliot's first single "Lose Control" (also featuring Ciara) off her new album which hits stores June 28th. The video is set to debut in the next couple of weeks.
Scoop can also be seen showing off his sexier side in P. Diddy's new Sean John ads "Big Sexy".
"It was a blessing to work with Mariah and now Missy. Not only because I'm a fan of theirs, but also because it means lots of radio and video play," Fatman Scoop told SOHH.com. "I'm in the process of transitioning from Mariah's record to Missy's right now. It's hard to follow up a record like Mariah's, but Missy's record is really about to set it off! I'm in a good place in my career right now. One day when it's all said and done I'll be able to tell my grandkids I worked with Mariah and Missy -- two of the most talented and beautiful women in all of music."
Expect big things to continue for Fatman Scoop in 2005-2006 as he preps his latest project, www.FatmanScoop.com. The new site will allow him to tend to his loyal and fast growing fan base.

It's hana hou on 'Oprah' for boy from Wai'anae
By Catherine E. Toth
Paul Robins hasn't woken up from his wildest dream just yet.
The 12-year-old karaoke fan from Wai'anae who was surprised by Oprah Winfrey's crew in February, just wrapped up a recording session with his idol, Mariah Carey, in Los Angeles.
He will be singing the song "I Pray" — especially written by Carey for him — on today's "Oprah." The song will debut on WOW Gospel 2005 this fall, said his mother Laurie Robins.
"It was really exciting just to work with Mariah again and her backup singers," said Paul Robins. "(The song) is really inspirational. I think once it goes into the market, I think a lot of people will like it."
The homeschooled sixth-grader leaped into the national spotlight in February — on his 12th birthday — when his "wildest dream" was fulfilled by Winfrey. He got personal voice-coaching from Carey and the chance to perform live on "Oprah" in front of a worldwide audience.
After this experience — recording a single and being on two "Oprah" shows — Paul Robins has modified his career goals just a little.
"I still want to be a chef," he said. "But maybe just on the side."

Mariah in London in July ? part 2
Remember a few weeks ago, I posted a news where I was talking of a possibility for Mariah to perform at this year "Party in the Park".  It's now known that this year "Party in the Park" has been cancelled to make way for a possible Live Aid II event.  Live Aid II called Live 8 would take place in London's Hyde Park on July the 2nd..  A similar event may also take place on the same day in Washington.  Until now, there's no official confirmation Mariah would be there at one of these events.  Wait and see.  For more infos about these events, click here.

Mariah Carey Says She Looks At Tabloid Stories As Comedy
In her E! reality special, Mariah Carey: Uncut, the R&B diva revealed she's learned to deal with tabloid stories and rumors about her by laughing at them. She says, "We look at celebrities, we put them on a pedestal and we love to tear them down.. I can't worry about people's rumors and little stories that they make up every day about me. It's comedy at this point." The program went behind the scenes with Mariah Carey as she promoted and launched her current album, The Emancipation Of Mimi. E! will air an encore presentation of the show this Wednesday (May 25) at 10 p.m.
Among her revelations:
On performing on TV: "I'm super-critical of my performances, so it's really tough. When you're in a TV studio...it's so kind of like you can hear a pin drop. I end up just being a little more inhibited because it's not like being on stage with your fans right there, you're really separated by the cameras and the whole thing.
On her nickname, Mimi: "It's really not that deep. It's just a nickname. The people who use the name for me are people who really love and care about me."
On struggling on the way up: "My whole life felt like a struggle because I had a lot of situations where I really, really relied on music. It was a saving grace for me. This is going to get me where I need to go. I know what it was like to have only one pair of shoes, I know what it was like to waitress -- although that was a very short very bleak period of my life."
On her "breakdown" in 2001: "There was no nervous breakdown. I was exhausted, I was emotionally depleted, I was at the end of my rope in a lot of ways. I did need to take a break. I had good times, I had difficult times and whatever it is, God doesn't put anything in front of us that we can't handle."
Mariah will perform on the Oprah show Tuesday (May 24). She's also scheduled to perform on the 2005 MTV Movie Awards on June 9.
Mariah's current single, "We Belong Together," is Number One this week on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart. The Emancipation Of Mimi is at Number Three on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

I know some of you are interested in the music industry as much as I am, it seems a lot of changes will happen in the next few months, on May the 16th. I already posted an interesting news, here's another one:
Thompson named EVP Promotion at IDJ
Greg Thompson has been appointed Executive Vice President Promotion for the Island Def Jam Music Group, it was announced today by Steve Bartels, President, Island Records and COO Island Def Jam Music Group.  In this new position, Thompson will oversee the activities of IDJ’s Promotion (excluding urban promotion), Artist Development and New Media Departments. Thompson will remain based in New York and report directly to Bartels.
“Greg is a seasoned music executive whose vast knowledge and talents cross all avenues of the music business,” said Mr. Bartels.  “He is a pivotal member of our senior management team and as he returns to the world of promotion, we have every confidence in his ability to bring that same leadership, knowledge and expertise to his new role. Although he will have to work on saying 'hey buddy, you're my guy.'”
“I welcome this challenging new opportunity and the vote of confidence from L.A., Jay and Steve,” said Thompson.  “It is exciting to be involved again with my first love, promotion, and to continue the great accomplishments the staff has achieved thus far.  I look forward to being able to play a significant role in bringing the company to its next level of success. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to pick up L.A.'s new suits at Barney's.”

The Emancipation of Mimi
Artist: Mariah Carey
By David Lopez
Rating: *****
We've seen some major changes in Mariah Carey's image over the years. Going from a shy and quiet R&B singer with songs like "Hero" and "Dream Lover," to a sexier
Mariah thereafter with a brand new diva attitude, she has shown that even though going through setbacks -- like her acting debut in the disappointing film and soundtrack "Glitter," to her much publicized breakdown soon after, then following with a subpar album with Charmbracelet -- she has the willpower and determination to keep on striving for success.
After a brief haitus since her last album, it's official Ms. Carey is back -- a new and improved Mariah Carey. There is no denying her place amongst the upper echelon R&B artists, and with her tenth album, The Emancipation of Mimi, she delivers an insightful opus in which she claims her freedom from men on a complete album that delivers a solid punch of soul, hits, romance and sex appeal. Determined to top the charts once again, she releases an album which helps her regain the once prominent position she held throughout the 90's as one of the premier female vocalists.
The explosive lead single "It's Like That," is a radio friendly dance hit, which serves as a public reintroduction to Mariah, as she reinvents her self once again. "It's a special occasion, Mimi's emancipation, a cause for celebration, I ain't gonna let nobody's drama bother me," exclaims Mariah.
The ever so reflective "We Belong Together," is a passionately sung and spirited entry about the diva's feelings about someone once dear to her, as she sings "When you left I lost a part of me, it's still so hard to believe, come back baby please, cause we belong together." Following is the track "Shake You Off," which is a therapuetical anthem to getting over a false love.
The Snoop Dogg assisted and Neptunes produced "Say Something," is a bouncy track in similar fashion to Jodeci's classic hit "Come And Talk to Me", as it incites one to step up and approach the person you like.
"Get Your Number," is a party starter that entices head nodding, and "One and Only," featuring Twista and "Circles" add to the relationship themes of the album, with both pertaining to the difficulties of an unfaithful relationship. "Your Girl," adds even more momentum to the album, as she demonstrates in convincing fashion her claim for being your second half.
She closes the LP with "Fly Like a Bird," a defining moment on the opus as she asks for God's guidance throughout the harsh times that life offers.
The great thing about this album is the song writing, and Mariah's voice. Though this is no big secret, the combination of the both make for one of Mariah's best albums to date. The album's authenticity helps Mariah take the R&B game to new heights, as she manages to put together an LP that everybody will find enjoyable from your biggest 50 Cent fan right down to a Syleena Johnson fan. Mariah successfully bridges the gap between old school, new school, and everything in between. The Emancipation of Mimi is definitely a new beginning for the R&B diva.

Mariah Carey has vision of No. 1 on pop charts
A one-place jump to No. 2 for Mariah Carey's new single "We Belong Together" pushes the singer to her highest position on Billboard's Hot 100 since she topped the chart in February 2000 with "Thank God I Found You."
Carey was last No. 2 in August 2001 with "Loverboy." While she's far enough away from Gwen Stefani's reigning champ "Hollaback Girl" to not be a serious challenger for No. 1 next week, Carey could be looking at her 16th chart-topper as soon as two weeks from now. Stefani logged her fourth week at No. 1 in the period ended May 15.
Carey's chart climb had been aided by an abundance of radio spins. On the Hot 100 Airplay chart, "We Belong Together" rises one place to No. 1, becoming Carey's first chart-topper on this survey since "One Sweet Day" ruled for 13 weeks in 1995-96. The Hot 100 is based on both radio airplay and retail sales.

Divas to go
The golden age of R'n'B is over - that much clear. Just don't go blaming the regal figure the much maligned Mariah Carey...
by Ben Thompson
As music lovers struggle to come to terms with the end of R&B's turn of the century belle époque, the search for scapegoats intensifies. From Missy Elliott's terrible Gap ad, to Pharrell Williams's embarrassing relationship with Jade Jagger, a lot of people who once seemed infallible have let us down badly over the past couple of years. But the one person no one should point the finger at is Mariah Carey.
Carey's excellent current album, turns the clock back to the halcyon days of laser-guided digital slink. And critics who harped on about Mariah's newfound resemblance to Beyoncé were putting the cart before the horse. When it comes to big hair and a big voice, it's Carey who wrote the hymnbook that everyone else is singing from.

As befits a woman who got her name from Lerner and Loewe's Broadway standard 'They call the wind Mariah', Carey is a scientifically authenticated force of nature. Not only has her spectacular upper register been the single dominant influence on the Pop Idol school of unfettered vocal histrionics, but the 1995 Ol' Dirty Bastard mix of 'Fantasy' was also the rosetta stone of the hip hop/diva crossover.

In calling her comeback album The Emancipation Of Mimi - 'a nickname only used by those closest to her', apparently - Mariah has tapped into another vital lineage. The honourroll of female superstar alter-egos stretches from Janet Jackson's 2004 album Damita Jo (Janet's middle name), through the fun-loving, J-Lo, to Madonna's inner S&M trollop Dita, with her 1992 mantra 'Only the one that hurts you/Can make you feel better'. And until we hear from Beyoncé's own backup persona (a tempestuous 'inner diva' called Sasha), well, as one amateur reviewer of Mariah's album on Amazon.com put it recently , the idea that the most successful female recording artist in history needs to imitate the Destiny's Child frontwoman is 'just laughable ... People, please.'

Heroes note: These are our Belgian official sales charts, I know non Belgians will ask"why 2 charts?", well our little country has 1 chart for the French speaking part of Belgium and 1 chart for the Dutch speaking part of Belgium, weird huh... but that's Belgium.

"Say Somethin'" or " Shake it Off"???
I posted the news below, as Trey told to the Chicago fans that they were leaving to LA to shoot the video of "Shake It Off", but now MTV posted the following:
"Snoop Gushes About Mariah: 'She's Soft As A Cotton Swab!'
Over the years we've heard Mariah Carey work with the gulliest of MCs, from Ol' Dirty Bastard to Jadakiss to Mobb Deep. But after listening to Snoop Dogg sing her praises, it's difficult to imagine any rapper being more excited about collaborating with M.C. than the king of Cali. "She's so soft," Snoop said in a light, pimpish voice while recollecting working with Mariah. "She's beautiful too. I always tell her this story: When I was locked up in jail, that song 'Vision of Love' was the hottest song in the world. I used to always say, 'Man, if I could meet her!' So I worked with her, then Pharrell hooked it up for me to work with her again this time."
Snoop has similar praise for the song they collaborated on, "Say Somethin'." "The beat was just sick and it was bangin'," he said. "I was like, 'All right, give me that, M.C.' I took [the song] down to my studio and flipped my style to it.
"When I played [the finished version] for her, she was like, 'Oh, I love it!' I said, 'OK, give me a hug, baby.' She was just as soft as a cotton swab! Lord have mercy! Jesus, M.C.! What I wouldn't ... " he paused. "Let me stop."
Mariah's label was so enamored with the record, they initially wanted the song to be the first single from The Emancipation of Mimi, instead of "It's Like That."
"[Island Def Jam head L.A. Reid] was totally into that as the first single," Carey said in March. "Everybody was really happy and ready to go. I was like, 'It's great, but I don't know. It's very different for me structurally' — not to get technical or whatever, but in terms of the chord changes and the feeling, it's very Pharrell. He very much goes in that jazzy kind of direction, which is great. I can go there with him, but it's just not where I would naturally go."
M.C. and the D-O-double-G are getting back together next week in L.A. to shoot the video for "Say Somethin'," and Snoop promises that he'll be extra sharp for the clip.
"I gotta get real slick and sly, get my face real smooth like a baby's butt," he said. "Get my nails filed, get my hair did. I don't know what I'm gonna do for you, M.C., but I'm gonna do something real fly that's gonna be memorable. It's gonna be so we can go down in history and look real fly doing it."

Heroes comment: Maybe they are gonna shoot the two videos, 'cause due to Mariah's schedule they wont be able to shoot one later, or..... Trey said they were gonna shoot the video for "Shake It Off", but didn't said it was the next single and the fans misunderstood, or... it will not be the same single for the US as for the other countries, or.... I dunno.

Mariah on her way to shoot the video of "Shake it Off"
According to several fans who waited outside the Harpo Studios today at the Oprah taping, the next single is "Shake It Off".  The news has been confirmed by Trey who told it to the fans.  Mariah was in a hurry 'cause she needed to take a plane to California (probably Los Angeles), to shoot the new video, but she took time to let the fans take some pictures (in the car).
Thanks to Magda, Kathy, Dan, Frank, Alex and all the Chicago gang.

A mall tour of the US ????
Mariah Carey's It's Like That dances its way to the top
Mariah Carey's comeback single It's Like That from her latest album The Emancipation of Mimi is number one on Billboard's Dance Music Club Play chart this week. This is Carey's 10th single to reach number one on that chart.
Her ride on the dance chart began in 1991 when the title track from her second album Emotions, spent two weeks on top. Her other number one dance hits include Someday, Dream Lover, Anytime You Need A Friend, Fantasy, Honey, I Still Believe, and Through The Rain.
Carey's new single, the ballad We Belong Together, has marched its way into the number three spot on the Hot 100 chart.
Carey is also expected to commence a mall tour of the US in support of her new album.

"It's Like That" #26 out of 100 on iTunes Belgium.
It seems people begins to buy on iTunes, which makes sense considering the single costs 4.99 Euro ( +/- $6.30), when will Belgium understand it's way too much for a 2 titles cardboard sleeve single?  Unfortunately, until now iTunes Belgium doesn't add the sales in the charts.

"Mariah, we about to have the new Number One record in the country!"
Songwriter/producer Jermaine Dupri took home the Golden Note Award. Two of Dupri's disciples, pop diva Mariah Carey and R&B star Usher, presented the award, with Usher touting his longtime collaborator as "an extraordinary individual, my mentor, my confidante, my best friend." Carey added, "He's the truth when it comes to songwriting."
Dupri apparently failed to prepare for his time on stage. "I ain't wrote nothing down," he said, "'cause that ain't how I do my records." With much hooting from the audience, Dupri finally turned to Carey: "Mariah, we about to have the new Number One record in the country!"

Fashion dud Mariah shapes up
Mariah Carey, who is regularly mocked for her got-it-flaunt-it fashion sense, is getting a style makeover from her new best friend — Vogue editor-at-large Andre Leon Talley.
Pals of Carey's are hoping Talley can do what he did for Melania Trump and turn her into a style icon, possibly landing her on the cover of Vogue, as Melania was when she married Donald Trump.
Talley escorted Carey to Karl Lagerfeld's dinner at Matsuri last week, took her to Oprah Winfrey's celebration of African-American legends over the weekend near Santa Barbara, and hung out with the songbird yesterday in L.A.
According to Carey's rep and pal Marvet Britto: "I introduced them two months ago because Mariah needed guidance. She has an incredible sense of style — but then she went out in outfits like cutoff shorts and tank tops. It was her old team of people telling her to wear that.
"Mariah always said she would love Andre's guidance and wisdom, and when I called him to help her, he was thrilled and said, 'I would be honored!' "
"Andre is there to help Mariah's broken relationships with fashion houses. No one wanted to lend clothes to her because when she wore them the clothes would be different — shorter or not worn right — and it wouldn't complete their vision of the clothing . . .
"We don't want people to say things like 'skanky' . . . But that is changing . . ."
And how! For the big Winfrey weekend bash at the TV superstar's Montecito home, Talley got couturier Alexander McQueen to make Carey a one-of-a-kind dress.
The singer was one of 24 "legends," also including Halle Berry, Angela Bassett, Beverly Johnson, Diana Ross, Iman and Cecily Tyson, who received either diamond drop earrings or 5-carat solitaire earrings — worth $200,000 per pair.
An insider said, "This weekend must have cost Oprah at least $10 million."
The weekend started with luncheon at Winfrey's home Friday afternoon, followed on Saturday by a white-tie ball at the Baccara resort.
The festivities ended with a Sunday brunch at Winfrey's house that turned into a jam when such other honorees as Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight, Carey and Shirley Cesar joined the gospel choir.

On April the 5th., I posted the news about the ASCAP Awards and was wondering if Mariah would attend the ceremony, well I was right .
Mariah attended the 22nd Annual ASCAP Pop Music Awards
Scott Storch Named Songwriter of the Year at 22nd Annual ASCAP Pop Music Awards; Neil Young and Jermaine Dupri Receive Special Honors; ``Hey Ya!'' Named Song of the Year; EMI Music Publishing Takes Publisher Of The Year Honors.
Scott Storch was named Songwriter of the Year at the 22nd Annual ASCAP Pop Music Awards celebration held tonight at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California. OutKast's smash hit single 'Hey Ya!' received Song of the Year honors, and EMI Music Publishing picked up the Publisher of the Year award. Special awards were handed out to Neil Young who received the ASCAP Founders Award, and to Jermaine 'JD' Dupri who was honored with the ASCAP Golden Note Award.  Hosted by ASCAP President & Chairman Marilyn Bergman, over 700 leading songwriters, recording artists and music industry leaders gathered at the creative black tie gala to salute the songwriters behind some of today's most popular music as awards were presented to the songwriters and publishers of the most performed ASCAP songs of 2004. Among the honorees and notables in attendance were Neil Young, Jermaine Dupri, Usher, Mariah Carey, Scott Storch, Jessica Simpson, Nick Lachey, Ashlee Simpson, Big Boi of OutKast, Sheryl Crow, Janet Jackson, Ashford & Simpson, Maya Angelou, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Indigo Girls, Twista, Mo Ostin, Clay Aiken, J-Kwon, The Matrix's Lauren Christy, Graham Edwards & Scott Spock, Rick Nowels, John Shanks, Swizz Beatz, and Youngbloodz J-Bo & Sean Paul.
Another highlight of the evening was the presentation of the ASCAP Golden Note Award to multi-talented songwriter, producer, artist and record label owner Jermaine 'JD' Dupri in recognition of his groundbreaking achievements influencing the direction of American popular music and impacting the heart, soul and sound of pop music worldwide.
Superstars Mariah Carey and Usher joined Marilyn Bergman on stage to pay tribute to their musical collaborator. Dupri has worked with Carey on a number of albums and has four songs on her current album The Emancipation of Mimi, which is tearing up the Billboard charts. Dupri's work on Usher's multi-platinum album, Confessions, garnered four 2005 Grammy nominations for his songwriting and production work on chart-toppers, 'Burn,' 'Confessions Part II,' and 'My Boo.' Dupri and Usher picked up awards during the ceremony for their winning songs 'Burn,' and 'Confessions Part II.'

HipHop and Rap manifesto to boycott all artists on Universal Music Group labels
A Cali friend of mine, just gave me this info by phone.
Here's the message from The Rap Manifesto:
Universal Music Group (UMG) is the target of our national boycott because they are the leading company in the rap industry. They are a colossal recording company that owns about one-fourth of the global music market. This company owns three of the top five rap labels: Island Def Jam, Interscope, and Universal Music.
In 1999, UMG pledged to ban sexually graphic and violent images in their music as a result of pressure from concerned citizens. The company quickly went back on this promise when it added Def Jam to its holdings, and has since actively promoted explicit sex and violence in its rap music and videos.
We are also boycotting UMG because we believe that this company is headed in the wrong direction when it comes to rap. It is currently working with an adult video company to further exploit Black men and women in rap with a new music video channel featuring uncensored and uncut videos from artists. How low will this company go in its exploitation of Black Americans to make a buck?
We are boycotting all UMG artists to pressure this company to take the lead in moving the rap industry forward. While it might seem unfair to boycott unrelated artists who are not responsible for UMG’s poor judgment, an all-out boycott is necessary to send a strong economic message to the company. Why should UMG artists in other genres enjoy a vast diversity of images in their music while rap artists are pigeonholed into damaging racial stereotypes?
They ask to boycott the following artists:
Bryan Adams - Ashanti - Audioslave - Cecilia Bartoli - Beck - Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - Black Eyed Peas - Mary J. Blige - blink-182 - Blues Traveler - Andrea Bocelli - Bon Jovi - Busta Rhymes - Mariah Carey - Elvis Costello - Sheryl Crow - D-12 - Dr. Dre - Eminem - Melissa Etheridge - Eve - 50 Cent - Renée Fleming - G-Unit - Vince Gill - Godsmack - Amy Grant - Hoobastank - Enrique Iglesias - Ja Rule - Jay-Z - Elton John - Toby Keith - The Killers - Diana Krall - Limp Bizkit - Ludacris - Reba McEntire - Brian McKnight - Nelly - No Doubt - Jessye Norman - Luciano Pavarotti - Puddle of Mudd - Ashlee Simpson - Snoop Dogg - Gwen Stefani - George Strait - Shania Twain - Sting - The Cardigans - The Hives - 3 Doors Down - U2
Heroes note: I really hope this will not affect too much the sales of Mariah's album.

UMG set to restructure international operations
Financial Times Report Says New Chairman/CEO Ready to Make Changes
Following last week’s announcement that Universal Music Group is selling its U.S. and European CD and DVD manufacturing businesses to U.S. company Glenayre Technologies, the Financial Times reports this morning that UMG is now preparing to revamp the entire structure of its international operations.
The restructuring would be the first move by newly promoted UMG International Chairman/CEO Lucian Grainge, who recently took over for Jorgen Larsen, who has been head of International since UMG merged with PolyGram in 1998. Larsen is stepping down after a 30-year career.
Grainge was previously UMG’s UK head, where, in addition to successfully marketing acts such as the Scissor Sisters and Keane, he implemented cost-cutting measures that reduced operational overhead by about $63 million. He is now likely to roll out a similar program across UMG’s entire International division, according to the FT.
“He will look at the structure and organisation and make changes quite quickly,” a source told the paper.
Expected changes include the formation of regional hubs to consolidate operations in certain groups of countries, and a revamping of the division’s management board structure.
According to IFPI data, European record sales fell 5.4 per cent to $12.3 billion last year, while sales in Asia fell 1.8 per cent to $6.2 billion. UMG as a whole has engaged in heavy cost-cutting already, resulting in higher operating income. The upcoming restructuring of International is seen as an extension of that mandate.
UMG has made no official announcement about the International restructuring as of yet. Last month, new Vivendi Universal Chairman/CEO Jean-Bernard Levy told shareholders that the company intends to hold onto the music company.

Heroes comment: Let's hope this restructuring will work in favor of promotion for some artists .

Oprah pays tribute to pioneering black women at lavish Santa Barbara gala
Oprah Winfrey rolled out the silver carpet for a lavish tribute to pioneering black women, then strolled it herself in a red Vera Wang ball gown.
Guests including Usher, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were on hand for the ball Saturday night at the seaside Bacara Resort and Spa.
The talk show host joked with friends at the resort's entrance and praised the 25 honorees, including Coretta Scott King, Diana Ross, Maya Angelou and Cicely Tyson.
"These are women who, when I was growing up, made a difference for me," Winfrey told reporters, who weren't allowed inside the event. "The first time I saw Diana Ross and the Supremes on the Ed Sullivan Show, it changed my life."
Winfrey also linked the older black stars with their younger counterparts in a more intimate meeting Friday night at her Montecito home.
"There was nobody hating on nobody," said singer Patti LaBelle, who attended that party along with Mariah Carey and Alicia Keys.
Others at Saturday's bash included Gladys Knight, Halle Berry, Ashanti and California First Lady Maria Shriver.
Winfrey said it was a no-brainer to host her tribute in Santa Barbara.
"If you're going to have it, it might as well be in paradise," she said, laughing.

If you win this auction you will receive:
Five tank tops - Two pairs of Jeans - Five pairs of underwear (thong etc) - Two bras.
This auction is 100% authentic and has been valued at $2000."
Click here if you wanna bid, warning you'll need to hurry as Mariah will surely bid to have her suitcase back .
Also, take a look at the guys' feedbacks, he already sold 9 pairs of jeans worn by Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson's authographed bra , etc.... what's funny (or should I say sad), is that people believe this, bid and pay.

"Friendz", a master piece!
At first N.O.R.E's new album was called " Norminacle" and previewed for a commercial release back in November 2004.  Due to some label problems (remember the "Rock A Fella" venture), the album was pushed back and also the title changed to "1 Fan A Day".  The album is now previewed for fall 2005.
This album will be a must have for N.O.R.E's fans but also for Mariah fans, as the track "Friendz" features Mariah and Big Pun and produced by Green Lantern (who is no more Eminem's DJ due to some beef with 50 Cent).  "Oye Mi Canto" doesn't feature Tego Calderon 'cause it seems from what I was told, Tego wanted $25K for his verse being on the song.
Back to "Friendz", the track is absolutely faboulous and promises a major hit. The beat is outstanding and Mariah's part is a mix of the best Rap, Rnb joints I've heard with an incredible sensual voice.  The part where she goes : "Touch my body, feel my body" is really hot, and there's also an high note.
As soon as I have all the legal and written authorizations from N.O.R.E and Dame Dash, the track will be added on Go 4 Hit Radio.  And I'm sure it will be a "most requested" title in the playlist.
I know it's only a matter of time before the track illegally leak on the internet, but like a producer good friend of mine says: "unauthorized duplication will get yo ass blasted!" .

"Party in the Park" in London..... and if....
Remember, on April the 6th. I posted a contest from T-Mobile for UK fans and the prize was a Meet and Greet with Mariah in London in July.  As we now know that Mariah will visit Europe in June/July, I wanted to share an idea I had since day one... and if Mariah would perform at "Party in The Park" in London in July?  This would be a very, very good promotion as we know that last year 100.000 visitors attended this concert and hundred thousands saw the concert on TV.  Also, "Party in the Park" is a charity event which's president is The Prince of Wales (Prince Charles) who setted up The Prince's Trust in goal of helping young people fulfil their potential and helping the ones being excluded from society because of barriers they faced.
Wouldn't that be great?

Mariah's Millions Mystifies
By Roger Friedman
If you had told anyone in the music biz two years ago that Mariah Carey would have a runaway hit album in 2005, they'd probably have collapsed in hysterics.
But "The Emancipation of Mimi" looks as if it will finish the current week at No. 1 again, with another 200,000 or so copies in the hands of fans.
"Mimi" is probably going to be Mariah's biggest hit album in over a decade. It's already spawned two hit singles, and there are several more on the way. Go figure.
Credit has to go to manager Benny Medina, who spirited Mariah away from another manager and a label deal. Remember the short-lived MonarC Records? He also jumped sides, leaving former client Jennifer Lopez in the dust.
It's poetic justice, since Lopez and Carey have had an old-fashioned feud going for several years, thanks to Lopez poaching some music Carey had planned on using for the movie "Glitter."
After a nervous breakdown, a huge public divorce and bombs of both a movie and its soundtrack, Carey is back and bigger than ever.

Great Mariah review
In the new UK edition of Blues and Soul magazine (available tomorrow - Common on the cover) mariah receives a very favourable review, here it is:
Mariah Carey - The Emancipation of Mimi
By Bill Buckley
I think I was the only person in the Cosmos to like Mariah Carey's 'Glitter' LP, and after the mauling she got for it I've always had a soft spot for her. So maybe I'm a little too biased to review this, but, believe me, it is surprisingly good. Forget who she is, or rather who the media tell us she is, and instead concentrate on the songs and the performances - there's some great ones here. "I wish you knew", for instance, is cut from the same cloth as Alicia Keys' "You don't know my name" and features some superb back up vocals from Trey Lorenz. Equally enjoyable is "Fly Like a Bird", which in places reminds me of the late Minnie Riperton. There's a great gospel chorus on that one too and it forms a remarkable contrast to the commercial, pop R&B which the album also peddles. Best example of this is the Nelly collaboration, "To The Floor" - it's exactly as you'd expect, as is the Twista duet "One and Only". Snoop Dogg's "Say Somethin'" is classily very much of the moment too. Even the lead single, "Its Like That" has much to recommend it. If you can get past the edgy chorus the verses have a wonderful frothy melody which Mariah delivers perfectly. It's easy for purists to dismiss albums like this - especially with it's pretentious title and sleeve sentiments. But when Mariah delivers an invitation like "Stay The Night" (built on Ramsey Lewis' version on "Betcha by golly wow") I, for one, would volunteer a 'Yes'!...and admit it - wouldn't you?
Four stars out of five - Serious check out status.

Official download day to make "We Belong Together" #1
A sure way to get to #1 is to have one official download day for the song "We Belong Together".
But everyone has to participate. And the timing has be just right. We know that she will be on the Tonight show on May 11 and then on Ellen on May 13. And we know that she's singing on both shows, which will naturally increase the downloads of the song. But if the fans participate the song could go to #1 easily. I say Official download day on May 12, (in between her two television appearances).
50 Cent and Ciara are going to be tough competition but they never met face to face with a Mariah fan! OFFICIAL DOWNLOAD DAY MAY 12!

Deal him in
Sean "P. Diddy" Combs celebrated the 50/50 joint venture deal between his Bad Boy Records and Warner Music Group with a blow-out at the Cabanas atop the Maritime Hotel the other night. His Diddyness whooped it up with Jay-Z, Beyonce Knowles, Zac Posen, Russell Simmons, Tommy Hilfiger, Naomi Campbell, Damon Dash, Andre Harrell, Lyor Cohen and Star Jones. From there the party moved on to Glo nightclub, where Combs, Usher and a posse of pals drained 12 bottles of Cristal. Unfortunately, cops shut the club's doors at 1 a.m., leaving the likes of Denzel Washington and Mariah Carey out in the cold.

Carey's car park coup
Hollywood big-hitter Nicole Kidman and mad music munchkin Mariah Carey have come to blows over a carpark space.
But sadly it wasn't a case of fisticuffs over the last slot near the trolleys at Asda.
The space envy occurred at the swanky Karl Largerfield dinner at New York's Maritime Hotel.
According to a spy at the New York Post, professional twig Kidman rolled up to he front door of the hotel and tried to give the parking attendant $20 to allow her to park by the hotel's entrance.
However, canny Carey had got in first and already reserved the spot for her grand arrival in her whopping Maybach.
Nic subsequently had to suffer the indignity of tottering down the street to the hotel in her ridiculous heels.
Though Nicole is meant to be the first lady of Hollywood, it's good to see Mariah still tops the charts of diva-ish demands, innit?

Parking power
OH, the irony! Hollywood's favorite fashion plate, Nicole Kidman, was upstaged at a dinner for Karl Lagerfeld by skanky-chic icon Mariah Carey. It happened when Kidman's driver tried to slip an attendant $20 to park in front of the Maritime Hotel, but was told the space was reserved for Carey, who eventually arrived in a Maybach with Vogue's jolly giant, Andre Leon Talley. Our spy spotted poor Kidman tottering down the street in high heels to the hotel's Matsuri restaurant the other night, where she nibbled sushi with Sean Penn, Naomi Watts, Clive Owen, Miuccia Prada and Allegra Versace.

I Gotta Be Mimi!
On The Emancipation of Mimi, Mariah Carey flaunts seven octaves, three races, a bundle of nerves, and one king-hell identity crisis
by Cintra Wilson
The Emancipation of Mimi, Mariah Carey’s new album, just premiered at number one on the Billboard Top 200. It is ostensibly an “I am finally free to let my freak-flag fly” manifesto. Mimi used to be the name of Carey’s “other” personality, the one she used to blame her weird behavior on — i.e., That wasn’t me that had an incoherent meltdown in that hotel lobby, during the whole Glitter debacle. That was Mimi. In this self-improvement-oriented culture, most people would spend years in therapy trying to integrate or exorcise their inner Mimis, but with this album, Carey seems to be saying, “Fuck it — everyone already thinks I’m crazy. I may as well inhabit my disruptive personality full time; it’s more fun.”
Carey’s re-invention is particularly fascinating because of her whole new ethnicity — she is one-quarter black but has amplified this and declared her True Self to be African-American.
Carey is also one-quarter Venezuelan, and half Irish, so the question is begged: If this is her “true self,” why didn’t she go Gaelic? If Beyoncé had a panpipe, would Carey be picking up the shillelagh and releasing The Emancipation of Muirgheal?
But Mimi is a clear illustration of a form of schizophrenia that seems to hound burned-out superstars: Famous people, like abused wives, have sacrificed and abandoned so much of their original selves that they can forget who they are; if they have no legible roadmap back to who they used to be, they can end up like hermit crabs, scuttling around in other people’s iconography.
We’ve seen Madonna switch personae countless times: from cushy club slut to Marilyn Monroe in diamonds, from sadomasochistic bisexual Weimar exhibitionist to lamp-eyed yoga cowgirl, sleek children’s author to mystical Jewish Brit, etc. Carey has likewise seen some changes in her day, from the demure Mrs. Mottola to Madame Butterfly in long-sleeve leotard and Jet Ski, to images yet more pornographic and puzzling. On her new album, Carey has become a composite: She is all your favorite black recording artists tossed into a chipper, filled with resin and pressurized into one big medium-density fiberboard artist — strong and serviceable but with no organic wood grain.

Who's your favorite: Disco Mariah, Hip-Hop Mariah, or Ballad Mariah? It's debatable which version of the diva reigns supreme, but one thing is without question: In the 14 years since she released her self-titled debut, Mariah Carey has been one of pop music's most prolific hitmakers. As her latest, The Emancipation of Mimi, hits stores, EW.com attempts to whittle down her huge catalog to a few choice gems. (Make sure to post your own picks below.)

Springsteen's Latest Leaves Mariah, Rob Thomas In The Dust
Bruce Springsteen's newest release, Devils & Dust — the stripped-down follow-up to 2002's September 11-inspired The Rising — will enter Billboard's albums chart at #1, with first-week sales of over 222,000, according to the latest SoundScan totals. The second straight Springsteen opus produced by Brendan O'Brien (Train, Pearl Jam) and the Boss' 13th studio LP, Devils & Dust soared past recent chart-toppers Mariah Carey and Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas, proving once again why New Jersey's favorite son is a bona fide rock legend.
Carey's The Emancipation of Mimi clings to the chart's #2 spot with an impressive third-week total of close to 197,000 scans. Even though the pop diva's comeback disc experienced a 13 percent sales plunge, Mimi still managed to outperform the self-titled first crack from Bobby Valentino — the R&B crooner signed to Ludacris' Disturbing Tha Peace label — who opens at #3 with first-week sales of nearly 180,000 and scores the week's biggest debut album.

MTV rolls out big guns to promote new shows
With a pitch aimed at Main Street America, both coasts and everywhere in between, MTV Networks told Madison Avenue Tuesday that it touched everyone, everywhere, every way.
The Viacom cable division's third annual "upfront" presentation at the Madison Square Garden Theatre was another star-filled affair, mixing celebrities, humor, music and a blend of subtle (and not-so-subtle) attempts to gain a greater share of marketing dollars for the white-hot young adult demographic.
The two-hour-plus presentation included performances by the Black Eyed Peas, Willie Nelson and  Jessica Simpson and, to conclude the show, recent chat-toper Mariah Carey. Also appearing were Halle Berry, Paul Reiser, Goldie Hawn, Roseanne Barr and Don Cheadle.

"She is so smooth"
Siren Mariah Carey showed how "smooth" she can be at the annual ANDY advertising awards Thursday night at Capitale, where marketing execs gathered to do the self-congratulatory thing. Event chairman Alex Bogusky, who, as Bull's Eye has duly noted, is the ad industry's resident heartthrob, gushed to the audience that he got to touch the pop star during a photo op. "Just her arm — and she is so smooth," Bogusky said. "Seriously, she is by far the smoothest person I have ever felt in my life." For the record, we're sure Bogusky's wife is just as soft skinned, but there should be some warning signs if his ad agency, Crispin Porter + Bogusky, suddenly comes up with a plan to launch a body cream commercial starring one sexy songbird.

CNN People in the news transcript
PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR, PEOPLE IN THE NEWS: Hi, welcome to PEOPLE IN THE NEWS. I'm Paula Zahn. If ever an artist owned the '90s it was Mariah Carey. "Billboard" named her the artist of the decade, but after slumping sales, a tumultuous relationship and personal lows, Mariah had a very public meltdown. Now, she's back on top. Her new album, "The Emancipation of Mimi" debuted at number one on the "Billboard" 200 chart, announcing the return of one of music's most overwhelming vocal talents. I recently sat down with Mariah for a rare and candid interview about her music, her marriage and her comeback.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
ZAHN: Mariah, you once said that you had a desire to make music because it healed you and that you had a desire to become famous because it made you feel worthy and accepted.
MARIAH CAREY: Because I thought it would make me feel worthy and accepted and that was the big surprise.
ZAHN: She's the biggest selling female recording artist of all time.
RANDY JACKSON, CAREY'S LONGTIME PRODUCER: This woman has sold 150 million records. This will never happen again in our lifetime probably.
ZAHN: Right behind Elvis, just beyond the Beatles, there she sits, a super diva with pipes of steel. Oh what is that voice?
ANTONIO "L.A." REID, CHAIRMAN, ISLAND DEF JAM MUSIC GROUP: I don't know, man. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? I don't know.
ZAHN: (INAUDIBLE)
CAREY: I doubt that it's any -- I have no idea. I really don't. It depends on how much sleep I get that day.
